ShutterOdo

Canon shutter count checker

Most Canon EOS DSLRs keep their shutter count inside the camera, so a photo isn't enough. Plug the camera in by USB and ShutterOdo reads the counter directly in Chrome or Edge.

Connect by USB

For Canon EOS bodies that keep the count out of their photos, like the 7D Mark II, 5D Mark III and 70D. Works in desktop Chrome or Edge.

Read-only. Camera settings stay as they are.

Drop a photo

The EOS R5, R6 and R6 Mark II write the count into each photo. Use the original file from the memory card.

USB setup for Mac, Windows and Linux

Charge the battery, switch the camera on, turn Wi-Fi off and use a USB cable that carries data. Many micro-USB cables only charge. Quit EOS Utility, Lightroom, Photos and Image Capture first.

Mac: right before you click Connect, run killall -9 PTPCamera ptpcamerad in Terminal. macOS grabs cameras the moment they're plugged in.

Windows: Windows puts Canon cameras on its own driver, which Chrome can't use. Switch it to Windows' built-in WinUSB driver in Device Manager, no download needed. Step-by-step Windows guide. Or skip the computer and use Chrome on an Android phone with a USB OTG adapter.

Linux, ChromeOS and Android Chrome with a USB OTG adapter: usually works as is.

How to check a Canon shutter count over USB

  1. Open this page in Chrome or Edge on a computer. Safari and Firefox can't talk to USB devices.
  2. Plug the camera in and switch it on. Use a cable that carries data and turn Wi-Fi off on the camera.
  3. Free the camera from your computer. On a Mac, run killall -9 PTPCamera ptpcamerad in Terminal. On Windows, switch the camera to Windows' built-in WinUSB driver once, using the Windows guide. Or use Chrome on an Android phone instead.
  4. Click Connect camera and pick your Canon. The count shows in a few seconds.

Good to know

  • The USB reading comes from Canon's own counter, property 0xD1AC, which the camera reports to tethering software.
  • Canon file numbers like IMG_4821 aren't a shutter count. They reset when the counter passes 9999 or when you reset numbering.
  • To confirm a reading, take one photo and click Read again. It should go up by exactly 1.

Canon questions

Can I check a Canon shutter count from a photo?

Only on some models. The EOS R5, R6, R6 Mark II and PowerShot G5 X Mark II write it into each photo. Most EOS DSLRs, including the 7D Mark II, 5D Mark III and 80D, don't, so you need the USB method.

Why does my 5D Mark IV show nothing?

The 5D Mark IV doesn't share its counter over USB or in its files. Canon service can read it during a repair or check-up.

Does reading it over USB change anything on the camera?

No. ShutterOdo opens a read-only session, asks for the counter and closes. It doesn't change settings or touch your memory card.
